An AI agent is an AI that can take steps on your behalf instead of only answering. You give it a goal, and it decides what to do next, uses tools, and keeps going until it is done or stuck.
Think of it like
A chatbot is someone who answers your question. An agent is someone who takes your errand list and actually goes to the shops.
What actually happens
You give a goal. The model picks a tool. The tool returns a result. The model reads the result and picks the next step, repeating until the goal is met.
You → goal → [ agent ] → picks tool → tool runs → result → agent decides → done
